“Special Instruments” Season One Episode One.

  • Philadelphia Small Works Gallery 1609 North Delaware Avenue Philadelphia, PA, 19125 United States (map)

The same chance music, with different instruments, and different chances.

“SPECIAL INSTRUMENTS” Season One EPISODE ONE: Original aleatoric music by Melinda Rice and Carlos Santiago played on the violins that they have found, including a beloved violin from a friend’s high school years, an Irish instrument passed down for generations, a brand-new instrument by an amateur maker in PA, a tiny instrument, and the violinists’ own instruments.

THIS SERIES will EXPLORE THE notion that instruments carry the resonances of players/owners/makers from the instruments’ past lives and maybe contain some kind of imprint of their essential being; perhaps a soul?

MUSICIANs BIO: Carlos Santiago is a violinist and composer, formally trained in classical/jazz and interested in deep listening. Melinda Rice is a violinist, violist and composer interested in music with space for genuine reaction from performers and audience. They met at the Philadelphia Creative and Performing Arts High School, and reconnected after a space of about twenty years. They co-authored an article on listening in the Spring 2023 Issue of The Turnaround.

Special note: If you have an instrument that you’d like to join the list of instruments to be played, please contact us. Taking violins right now. Considering other instruments as the project continues.
